The Kimber CDS9 brings a modern twist to the double-stack 1911 platform with its compact footprint, optics-ready slide, and threaded match barrel—all packaged into a lightweight aluminum frame built for everyday concealed carry.
I equipped this pistol with an Olight Osight RMSc red dot and the SureFire XSC-Hellcat light, both of which paired up nicely with the CDS9’s direct-mount and rail system. I also tested it with a CGS Mod 9 SK suppressor, which really elevated the look—think James Bond with a side of John Wick.
Controls are thoughtfully recessed to prevent snagging and the overall feel is slim, light, and easy to conceal. The fish-scale slide serrations give you reliable traction when racking the slide but let your hand glide forward with minimal friction—great for holster clearance. The mag release is recessed yet easy to actuate, and the lack of a grip safety sets this platform apart from more traditional 1911DS designs.
The trigger has a bit of slack up front, but hits a solid wall and breaks clean—very crisp. The reset is about what you’d expect and allows for predictable follow-up shots.
Out on the range, the CDS9 performed well, but I did experience occasional failures to feed using 115-grain Fiocchi and Federal ammo. Kimber notes a break-in period, so I’ll continue testing with 124-grain loads and possibly adjust the recoil spring if needed—especially for suppressed shooting, where I noticed the slide occasionally failed to return fully to battery.
Removing the rear sight plate for optic installation required some extra care—it was torqued down hard, and I had to avoid stripping the bolt heads.
If you're in the market for a slim, red-dot-ready 9mm with 1911 ergonomics but without the bulk—or the grip safety—the CDS9 is worth a serious look.
