Kimber 2K11 Target

What’s up everyone, RazorMP here. Today I want to share my thoughts on the Kimber 2K11 Stainless Target OR—a full-size, high-capacity 1911-style pistol chambered in 9mm that aims to bring modern features to the classic platform.

First Impressions and Build Quality

Right out of the box, the 2K11 stands out with its stainless-steel frame and slide, both finished in Kimber’s KimPro Granite matte coating. The new MJD Designs Kevlar® and carbon-fiber grip module strikes a balance between strength and lightweight feel, and its texture echoes the slide serrations for a cohesive look. You’ll also find checkering on the front strap, a bumped grip safety, and ambidextrous thumb safeties—the kind of thoughtful details that add up.

Under the hood is a 5-inch, fluted, ramped barrel with 5R rifling and a 1:10 twist, polished with a Coyote PVD finish. That bull-barrel profile not only looks sharp but also adds weight up front for recoil control. Kimber’s custom 2K11 front and rear serrations make the slide easy to manipulate, and the external extractor promises reliable ejection.

Breaking It In

Initial rack was a bit stiff—typical of stainless-on-stainless components fresh from the factory. A light coat of high-quality lubricant smoothed things out immediately, and after a couple hundred rounds the action opened up nicely. If you’re new to 2011-style pistols, expect a similar break-in period before things feel buttery smooth.

On-Range Performance

Testing was done with 96-grain solid-copper Velocitas ammunition (thanks to Velocitas for supplying the test rounds). Here’s what stood out:

  • Recoil Management: The combination of the bull barrel and overall weight distribution kept muzzle flip in check.
  • Trigger: The GT Match Grade aluminum flat-face trigger broke cleanly between 3 and 4 pounds, with a short, tactile reset.
  • Reliability: Zero malfunctions through several hundred rounds—feeding, extraction, and ejection were rock solid.
  • Reloads: You get one 17-round and two 20-round magazines in the box, and the enhanced sub-frame/magwell geometry made fast mag changes feel intuitive.

I also mounted a SureFire X300 for added front-end weight and illumination, and a Holosun 507 Comp on the included RMR adapter plate. That setup proved very capable for Limited Optics competition, though note that installing the plate removes the rear iron sight entirely—no co-witness here unless you swap to suppressor-height irons.

Things to Consider

  • Size & Carry: At roughly 8.56 inches long and 35 ounces unloaded, this pistol isn’t ideal for deep concealment—but it excels for range, duty, or competition roles.
  • Finish Durability: The polished Coyote PVD barrel looks great, but some finishes can start to show wear after heavy use. I’ll report back after more range sessions to see how it holds up.
  • Optics-Ready: Kimber includes an RMR footprint adapter plate and three magazines right out of the box—additional plates for RMSc, DPP, ACRO, and 509T are sold separately.
  • Price Point: You’ll find the 2K11 in the low-to-mid $2,000 range, which places it among premium production double-stack 1911s without reaching fully custom pricing.

Final Thoughts

The Kimber 2K11 Stainless Target OR brings a feature-rich package to the double-stack 1911 world: modern materials, optics readiness, generous magazine capacity, and match-grade components. If you’re looking for a high-capacity 1911 that bridges tradition and innovation without breaking the bank on custom work, this one deserves a close look.

As always, I’ll see you on the high ground or in the next video. RazorMP out.
